June 20th 2025 is a historic day for the Britain As the House of Commons approved a bill to legalize assisted euthanasiapaving the way for the country’s biggest social change here now.
The bill on assisted euthanasia, which must now be voted on by the House of Lords, voted after a marginal vote 314 in favor and 291 against.
Doctors will have the right to help patients in the final stage to end their lives, after a harsh vote held in the House of Commons.
Members voted 314 votes in favor and 291 by – a majority of 23 votes – to approve the Kim Leadbeater bill on incurable adults (end of life), despite warnings that it was hurriedly voted on and could negatively affect people with disabilities.
According to the law, people with incurable illness in England and Wales, in which they have been diagnosed with less than six months of life, will have the right to seek medical help to die.
It is expected that the process will begin by the end of the decade, with estimates suggesting that up to 4,000 people will use it annually within 10 years.
Voting was carried out while supporters and opponents of law change were gathered outside parliament.
MPs made passionate appeals in favor and against the adoption of the law. They voted freely for a “issue of consciousness”, with most parties separated between the pros and cons.
The majority that supported the change were 55 in a preliminary vote in November. Some MPs seemed obviously excited as they left the room.
Among those who voted in favor of changing the law were Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and his predecessor from the Toris party, Rishi Sunak.
