Brazil: Zaich Bolsonaru to go to UN General Assembly though unvaccinated

Despite the fact that its president Brazil, Zaich Bolsonaro, refuses to be vaccinated against coronavirus, said he will go to the UN General Assembly, which will be held next week in New York. It is worth noting that the city authorities have made it mandatory to show a vaccination certificate.

“I will be at the UN General Assembly next week, I will deliver the inaugural speech,” Zaich Bolsonaro said during a speech. It will be “a soft speech, quite objective, focused on the points of interest”, while referring to the management of the pandemic in Brazil, agricultural enterprises and energy issues.

Zaich Bolsonaro’s participation in the UN General Assembly was called into question on Wednesday when the New York authorities imposed a vaccination certificate for access to the General Assembly room.

New York City Health Commissioner Dave Choxi stressed that the General Assembly amphitheater is “a conference center” that is subject to the same rules as most indoor venues in New York.

Hours later, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he could not impose this restriction on heads of state.

Brazil, with a population of 213 million, is the fourth country in the world in the number of vaccine doses given (214 million), according to Our World in Data. But the president has so far refused to be vaccinated with any of the Covid-19 vaccines.

Bolsonaro said he would be vaccinated “on the last day, I guarantee it” and has repeatedly noted that he will be “the last Brazilian” to be given a vaccine against Covid.

The far-right leader, who was infected with the coronavirus last year, reiterated that he has already developed immunity. “My antibody level is high,” he told Health Minister Marcelo Keiroga, who recommended that he be vaccinated.
