‘All appropriate measures’ will be taken by Brazil to defend its businesses and its employees, from their duties 10% imposed by the US, as promised today (3.4.2025) by Brazilian President Luis Inasio Lula da Silva.
“We are defending multiples and free trade and will respond to any attempt to impose a protectionism that no longer has a place in the world,” the Brazilian president said. The measure aimed at Latin America’s largest economy was announced last night by Donald Trump as part of a colossal duty attack around the world.
“In the face of the US decision to impose additional tariffs on Brazilian products, we will take all appropriate measures to defend our businesses and our employees,” Lula said.
According to him, these measures will be based on “the law of economic reciprocity”, which was approved yesterday by the Brazilian parliament, as well as the “World Trade Organization Guidelines”.
This law, which was rarely in favor of the left and the right, allows the Brazilian government to “adopt countermeasures” to respond to “unilateral actions, policies or practices of a country or economic bloc, which adversely influence the global competitiveness”.
