Brazil: Death toll rises to 132 after bloody police raid on Rio de Janeiro favelas

The deadliest police operation in its history Rio de Janeiroat Brazilin the context of the dismantling of the major Comando Vermelho gang, has caused the death of at least 132 people, according to a count released today (10/29/2025) by a public agency, which doubles the official tally so far.

“According to our latest figures, the death toll stands at 132,” the services of the Public Defender, an organ of the state of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, which offers legal aid to the socially vulnerable, told Agence France-Presse.

Rio’s governor, Claudio Castro, said for his part that the official death toll from yesterday’s anti-drug operation was around 64, but warned that the number of victims is expected to “change”, as deaths are only counted upon arrival at the morgue.

Relatives of the dead have gathered in the streets of Rio, near the area where the operation took place, as well dozens of corpses were lying on the street.

It is recalled that the fierce clashes broke out on Tuesday morning when about 2,500 members of the security forces launched the operation.

The gang members didn’t back down and hit back with shootingsthey set up barricades, dropped bombs with drones, and there was no lack of hand-to-hand combat.

In addition to the tragic death toll of 132, dozens of people were injured, among them ordinary citizenswhile during the raid more than 200 kilograms of drugs and dozens of firearms were seized.
