Its former president Brazilian Zaire Bolsonarohe was found guilty by the country’s Supreme Court for an attempted coup.
According to the Guardian, Judge Carmen Lucia Antonouns Rotsa announced on Thursday that Zaire Bolsonaro, who took over the presidency in 2018, is accused of trying to remain violently in power after defeating in 2022 in the Brazilian election.
The judge stressed that the former president attempted to disperse the anti -democratic agenda in Brazil, but also praised the country’s democratic institutions, who endured and reacted with determination.
“The Republic in Brazil has not been shaken,” the judge told the capital Brasilia, pointing out the risk of spreading the “virus of authoritarianism”.
Brazilian Attorney General Paulo Gonth Banco had reported that Bolsonaro, along with 33 others involved, committed a series of crimes against the Republic and attempted a coup to remain in power, despite the defeat by current President Lula Da Silva.
This has also sparked strong reactions in the US, and at the end of August, Brazilian Justice Minister Ricardo Levadovsky was recalled.
At the same time, Donald Trump, in retaliation for trial, imposed a 50% duty measure on specific Brazilian exports to the US, claiming that it was a “witch hunt” against the far -right former president.
In addition, the Trump government had imposed sanctions on Judge Alexander de Moraes, who is chairing the Bolsonaro case, recalling his visa, citing a coup.
Bolsonaro’s sentence is expected to be set on Friday and it is estimated that the penalty for crimes such as a coup and a violent attempt to abolish democracy in Brazil can reach up to 43 years.
The former president did not attend the court this week, remaining in his villa, where he is under house arrest and where police officers have been placed to prevent his possible escape to a foreign embassy in Brasilia.
