How do European teams qualify in the World Cup finals
The process of qualifying for European teams in the World Cup includes two basic stages, with the aim of distributing the 16 tickets that UEFA is entitled to. Initially, the 12 winners of the qualifying groups secure direct participation in the finals. The other four seats are judged through a more complex process that includes playoff matches.
These playoff involves a total of 16 teams: the 12 finishing second in the group and four additional nations league. The latter are selected on the basis of their performance in the competition groups, provided that they have not already qualified or found in second place.
These groups are classified into four capacity groups. The latter of the clubs are divided into the first three groups, depending on their position in the FIFA world rankings in November 2025, while four from the Nations League are placed in the fourth group. Then, four qualifying trails are created, each including two knockouts: one semifinals and one final. The winners of these final matches win the last four tickets for the World Cup.
