The BBC has been plunged into its biggest crisis in decades after two senior executives resigned amid accusations of bias and the way a speech by Donald Trump was edited from the Panorama show.
The US president is threatening to file a lawsuit seeking $1 billion in damages over his edited speech.
The Telegraph newspaper, which first revealed the matter, writes that another BBC show, Newsnight, also selectively edited the same speech by Trump in June 2022, two years before Panorama. That montage was similar to that of the Panorama show.
“The BBC adheres to the highest journalistic standards,” a spokesman said in response to the Telegraph report. “This issue has been brought to our attention and we are looking into it,” he added.
On Monday, the BBC apologized for its Panorama broadcast, which spliced together three parts of Trump’s speech on January 6, 2021, when the Republican president’s supporters stormed the Capitol. The edited speech gave the impression that Trump incited the violence.
Trump’s lawyers said the BBC must withdraw the documentary by Friday or face a lawsuit for “at least” $1 billion.
They also want the BBC to apologize and compensate Trump for damaging his reputation and causing him “financial loss”.
