His journalism BBC defended the network’s outgoing chief executive Tim Davey two days after he resigned following accusations of bias and threats of legal action from US President Donald Trump.
“I’m very, very proud of our journalists in this building. They are doing work that I think is incredibly important,” Tim Davey said today, speaking for the first time since announcing his resignation as BBC director-general on Sunday.
“They are doing a wonderful job,” he commented characteristically.
The chief executive of the network’s news division also resigned on Sunday, sparking its biggest crisis in decades and dominating the headlines of the British press.
Davey, who has been director-general of the BBC since 2020, also sought to allay concerns about the network’s future.
“The BBC will do really well and I’m rooting for everyone in the team,” Davey said.
US President Donald Trump on Monday threatened legal action against the BBC after the network edited a speech he made in 2021, the day his supporters stormed the Capitol, which the BBC described as an “error of judgement” on Monday.
