Banks invest in education – 430 schools are renovated

The 8th Elementary School of New Philadelphia visited today (11.9.25) by the CEO of four systemic bankAlpha Bank Vassilis Psaltis, Eurobank Fokion Karavia, National Bank Pavlos Mylonas and Piraeus Christos Megalou, as well as the President of the Hellenic Banking Association Gikas Chardouvelis, accompanying the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the sanctuary for the start of the new school year.

Specifically, the 8th New Philadelphia Elementary School is one of the 430 schools upgraded under the Marietta Giannakou program with a donation of 100m euros from the four systemic banks. During the visit, the CEO, EET President and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis had the opportunity to tour the renovated facilities of the school as well as chat with students and teachers.

The administrations of the four banks emphasized their strong commitment to remain in support of the state to support education, by expanding the contribution to the Marietta Giannakou program in the coming years. This is the largest corporate social responsibility initiative in Greece.

With the initial donation of 100m euros from the four banks, work was carried out in the summer that enhanced security, functionality, accessibility and aesthetics in 430 kindergartens, elementary schools, gymnasiums, high schools and special schools in all regions of the country. These schools had been included in the first phase of the Marietta Giannakou flagship program established by the state.

We are firmly next to them. ” The four donor banks Alpha Bank, Eurobank, National Bank and Piraeus have announced an additional € 100m contribution this year, expanding 200m euros to the total funding of the program by banks in the two years 2024-2025.

Furthermore, they have pledged to make corresponding contributions for the years 2026 – 2027, taking into account the conditions and course of implementation of the Marietta Giannakou program.

The initiative is part of the broader framework of banks’ ESG actions, with the aim of creating safe, accessible and quality educational environment for all students. Through cooperation with the state, the four banks are actively contributing to the achievement of sustainable development goals, enhancing social cohesion and investing in the future of the younger generation.
