‘Backs’ from Commission is looking for Greece – Cyprus to proceed the cable

The Greek Government is currently insisting on the hard line in terms of electrical interface with Cyprus by offering full support to ADME And asking Nicosia to solve the pending.

These are six financial and regulatory issues, including the 25m euros that must be paid this year to ADMIE of electricity interconnection. In this way, Athens believes that the landscape will have clarified the technical issues.

At the same time, the government is alleged to ask for two things from the Commission in terms of the geopolitical part. One is the project’s inclusion in “Energy Avenues”, that is, the new venture that Brussels will soon announce. Although this is very likely, the list of projects has not yet been finalized.

The second issue is some kind of high -ranking statement, preferably by President von Der Laen, that the EU will not tolerate another Turkish intervention in the cable.

Under these conditions, Athens will proceed again with seabed investigations in Kaso, and ADMIE will also be secured to continue payments to the cable manufacturer, Nexans.

The above issues were found on Thursday (9.10.2025) at the focus of a meeting between the Ministers of Energy of the two countries, Stavros Papastavrou and George Papanastasiou, in Athens, which took place in a good climate and was constructed by the RIS.

In terms of the European and geopolitical dimension, it seems that there is an identification of views in view of the teleconference that the two ministers with Energy Commissioner Dan Yorgensen will have next week.

In this regard, yesterday’s announcement by the RIS yesterday that the two sides have decided the next steps for the project, in the direction of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulidis.

However, the Finance still exists the impasse as a result of the statements by Cypriot Finance Minister Maki Keravnou, who does not consider the project viable regardless of circumstances.

Finally, the attitude the Commission will take, if the Athens-Nicosia disagreements will first want to be resolved before expressing its support for the project in terms of Turkey.
