Approximately 76,000 officers of the Hellenic Police, Fire Brigade and Coast Guard will receive retroactively from 1 October 2025, with an average monthly increase 111 euros, based on the new one payroll included in the tax bill tabled in Parliament.
The total annual expenditure for the implementation of the new payroll amounts to 127 million euros, while for 2025 it is estimated at 32 million euros. In addition, 10.4 million euros will be allocated to the increase of hazard allowances and special working conditions.
Four salary classification categories
The new salary schedule establishes four salary classification categories, depending on the origin and rank of the executives:
Class A: Executives coming from the productive Schools of Officers of the Security Forces, being assigned directly or by competition or being transferred to the Corps of officers from their designation as officers, as well as officers graduates of Higher Educational Institutions (A.E.I.) of special duties or special services.
Class B: Non-commissioned officers, non-constables and equivalent and officers coming from productive or non-productive schools of the Corps as well as constables, firefighters and harbor guards of the same Corps.
Category C: Special guards and border guards, who are part of the police staff as well as firefighters of forest operations and firefighters of General Duties coming from category D.
Category D: Special guards and border guards of the Hellenic Police, forestry operations firefighters and general duty firefighters on duty
For each category of executives, 20 salary scales (M.K.) are defined. For the salary progression of executives, of all categories, from the lowest to the immediately higher salary scale, 3 years of service is required in the first salary scale and 2 years for each subsequent salary scale. For the salary development of executives from the lower M.K. at the next higher level, it is required to have completed the specified service time at the lower M.C.. The time of military service and the time of service under a project lease contract or a fixed-rate work assignment are not recognized as service, unless this time has been characterized by a provision of the law or by a court decision as having been spent in a dependent labor relationship under private law.
- The monthly basic salary of the Security Forces executives is determined by salary scale, salary classification category and years of service.
- The basic salary is increased by a factor depending on the grade and category of salary classification. These coefficients start at 1.00 and go up to 1.8.
Allowances and compensations
In addition to the basic salary, the officers of the Security Forces (Hellenic Police, Fire Brigade, Coast Guard – Hellenic Coast Guard) are paid specific allowances and compensations, as follows:
a) Family benefit. This benefit is paid and is a fixed part of regular earnings for married people and parents with children.
b) Allowance for special working conditions and dangerousness. It is paid due to the nature of the mission, the danger, readiness and employment without or beyond standard hours. The amount of the allowance depends on the grade. In particular, an amount of 490 euros is provided for the Chief, 470 euros for the Deputy Chief, 460 euros for Lieutenant General, 440 euros for Lieutenant General, 435 euros for Brigadier General and 415 euros for Police Deputy Director. For personnel such as special guards, border guards and forest operations/general duty firefighters on duty the allowance amounts to 205 euros.
The allowance is increased by:
- 70 euros for each child
- 130 euros for the spouse who does not work or does not receive a pension.
The surcharge is calculated separately for each beneficiary.
The allowance in question (together with its increments) is granted only as long as the executive continues to perform service justifying its payment. If he is seconded, transferred, made available or receives long-term educational or sick leave, his payment will be stopped at the same time, with a relevant certificate from the competent supervisor.
c) Position of responsibility allowance. It is paid monthly to those who actually exercise management/responsibility duties. Its height depends on the grade. Indicatively, monthly amounts are provided that start at 100 euros for a First Class Police Officer and rise incrementally (150 euros for a Deputy Director, 200 euros for a Director, etc.) up to 300 euros for a Brigadier General, 400 euros for a Lieutenant General, 500 euros for a Deputy Chief and reach 600 euros for the Head of each Corps. The basic condition for it to be granted is that the duties are actually performed. If the executive ceases to exercise them due to secondment, transfer, disposal or long-term leave, the allowance stops immediately.
d) Special compensations for additional/night work.
- A special compensation of 46 euros is paid to staff who, due to the nature of the assignment, are proven to work more than five days a week, for each additional day of work.
- The same staff, for working during night hours, are paid an additional special compensation of three euros and 3.33 euros per hour of night work.
- If the executive is removed from the specific duties (posting, transfer, disposal or educational/sick leave beyond two months), the payment stops immediately, with a relevant certificate.
- Executives who are seconded or assigned as security personnel to the offices of members of the Government, Deputy Ministers, General and Special Secretaries, regional bodies and MPs/MEPs, continue to be paid the above special compensations for overtime and night duty, as well as overtime compensation if they actually perform security duties. If they perform administrative duties, then they only receive the prescribed overtime compensation.
e) Border allowance. It amounts to 130 euros per month and concerns executives who serve:
- within the North Aegean Region,
- in the Regional Unit of Evros,
- in the Dodecanese Prefecture of the South Aegean Region,
The same allowance is given to:
- to the officers of the Coast Guard who serve in the Port Authorities of Othon, Sayadas and Skyros,
- to the executives of EL.AS. who serve in the departments and stations that are closest to the borders of the continental border (Epirus, Eastern Macedonia and Thrace).
