Its former minister and member of parliament was attacked by 60 people SW, Makis Voridis, on Saturday night, while he was having dinner in a restaurant in Crete. Eyewitnesses describe scenes of chaos, with citizens trying to take cover behind tables and store staff calling the police. Some customers reportedly tried to subtly block the perpetrators, while others verbally attacked Makis Voridis, expressing outrage at the lack of security measures. “You can’t come here in such a climate, without protection, and the rest of us are also in danger,” some of the patrons allegedly told him, according to the same sources.

Mr. Voridis, his family and his company fled to an adjacent restaurant, initially in its basement, until police forces arrived. A little later, men of EL.AS. they cordoned off the area and escorted the former minister to 25th of August Street, in order for him to be safely removed from the scene. The police are conducting an investigation to identify the perpetrators. Makis Voridis has been in Heraklion for the last few days on a private visit.
