EUR 763 million amounted to total added value her Athenian brewing In the Greek economy, as the new CEO of the company, Sebastian Sanchez, pointed out yesterday (23.6.2025), during a presentation of the new socio-economic impact study for 2024 by Ev.
Specifically, the added value of the Athenian Brewery for 2024 increased by 85% compared to 2021. This amount corresponds to 0.32% of the country’s GDP, highlighting the company as one of the most important industrial appearances in Greece.
Particularly important is its multiplier impact on the economy, as for every 1 euro direct contribution of the company to GDP, an additional 4.9 euro value is created in the Greek economy.
At the same time, the total contribution of the Athenian Brewery to Public Revenue for 2024 stood at EUR 764 million, which corresponds to 0.70% of the total tax revenue of the state.
In the field of employment, the company directly, indirectly and induced by about 37,000 jobs, increasing more than 40% compared to 2021, while about 14,000 households benefit directly or indirectly from its activity.
“The elements of this year’s report leave no room for doubt: Athenian brewery is today a substantial and stable power in the Greek economy. We produce value, we boost incomes, we support households, and we are committed to a sustainable future, “Mr Sanchez said.
This year’s beer consumption course
In 2025 it started with several challenges for the Greek beer market due to weather and financial pressure, but expectations for the rest of this year remain positive. Although the ongoing global economic turmoil raises concerns about a possible reduction in consumption in the coming months, Mr Sanchez remains optimistic.
Relying on his experience of similar situations: “I remember when I was working in the same industry in Argentina during the great crisis in 2000, people were wondering what was going to happen and suddenly beer consumption increased by 10%. And because it was a product that people could buy everyday. ” Therefore, beer is a financially affordable choice chosen by consumers, even in times of financial difficulty.
Investment plan of 65 million euros for three years 2024 – 2026
Referring to the environmental objectives of the Athenian Brewery, Mr Sanchez stressed that the company is implementing the “Do a Better World” strategy, through which it is committed to zero CO₂ emissions in its productive activity by 2030 and full -fledgling throughout the supply chain by 2040.
“Already this year, we use 100% green power at the electricity level. In addition, a large project is underway in Patras, which will allow us to draw 30% of our total solar energy through turbines. As for water consumption, I am proud to say that both breweries, in Patras and Thessaloniki, have reached the lowest levels of water consumption in their history since May. Finally, we have achieved a 100% certification for the Sustainable Agricultural Program, which concerns sustainable agricultural production, “the company’s chief executive said.
For the period 2024 – 2026, the Athenian Brewery implements an investment program of over € 65 million, which includes actions to boost the presence of its trademarks, optimization of business processes, as well as significant green investments, which correspond to almost half.
“Environmental actions are moving on two main axes,” according to him, “the first is to reduce our environmental fingerprint from the carbon dioxide emission, which also deals with the electricity we use and the thermal energy we need in our factories.
At the level of electricity, 100% of our needs through green sources and through a FDPA program across Europe is covered. In thermal energy a large part of the investment in both factories in Patras and Thessaloniki, in the two production units we have, essentially the collection of 25-30% of this energy. First of all in Patras through a new photovoltaic park already done next to our factory and the rest of the thermal energy coverage still remains uncertain for us until 2030 when we will have an carbon footprint.
The second axis concerns the consumption of water. Water is another very important good for us, since beer production is a process that requires a lot of water. For the production of a liter of beer, about 3.5-4 liters of water are required. We have already managed through these investments to reduce this number to the lowest levels we have ever had in our history so far. We have saved 40 million liters of water within the first five months of 2025 from these actions. “
“We are now looking for the future, continuing on the path of development,” Mr Sanchez concluded.
