The Minister of Internal Affairs of Armenia, Arpine Sargsyan, and the Head of the EU Delegation to Armenia, Ambassador Vassilis Maragos, have discussed the visa liberalisation process in a meeting held recently.
Ambassador Maragos emphasised the close and effective bilateral cooperation, which is continually encompassing new areas, Schengen.News reports.
During the meeting, other issues such as the current cooperation programs in the law enforcement and rescue services sectors were also discussed, according to a report from Armen Press.
EU-Armenia Visa Liberalisation Plan to Be Finalised by June
In April this year, the head of the Migration and Citizenship Service of the Interior Ministry of Armenia, Nelly Davtyan, said that the action plan is expected to be finalised by June of this year.
He said that taking into account the experience of other countries that have reached a visa liberalisation agreement with the European Union, predictions regarding the requirements can be made.
The action plan will be developed by June, and it will no longer be a negotiable document. As much as we picture what the document is going to say based on the experience of other countries, we will be able to make concrete predictions about the requirements under the defined targets when we have the document.
Davtyan said that among the requirements that Armenia needs to complete in order to progress in the visa liberalisation talks with the EU is the issuance of biometric passports as well as identification cards.
Greece Expresses Its Full Support for Armenia’s Visa Liberalisation
Last month, the Ambassador of Greece, Christos Sofianopoulos, said that the Hellenic Republic fully supports Armenia’s visa liberalisation process with the bloc.
His comments came after a meeting held with the Minister of Internal Affairs of Armenia, Arpine Sargsyan.
At the same time, Minister Sargsyan talked about the relationship between the territories, stressing the need for further cooperation that would further tighten connections between both parties.
Armenia will begin issuing biometric passports and identification cards in the first half of 2026.
