For the first time, all of the maritime zones in which Greece is entitled is imprinted on a mapas said by the professor of International Relations and ND MP Angelos Syrigos, speaking to ERTnews. Mr Syrigos stressed that the Marine Spatial Planning (MSS), a product of cooperation from the Ministry of Environment and Energy with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministries, delineates the Greek marine zones from the western border with Albania to the eastern end of the Eastern end by continental shelf.
Regarding whether the engraving is a basis for future negotiations, in particular with Turkey, Mr Syrigos emphasized that the map is reflecting Greece’s rights under international law, adding that these are the country’s positions in the event of an appeal to the International Court of Justice. He also stated that Law 4009/2011 defines the midline as a continental shelf limit in the absence of demarcation agreements with neighboring states, which entails EEZ existence.
OR Announcement of the Turkish Foreign Ministerialwhich challenges some areas of the Greek BSE, has prompted Mr Syrigos’ comment that Turkey is used to reacting diplomatically to such cases. He even recalled the deposition of a Turkish map to the UN in 2020, which limited the Greek islands to a 6 -mile coastal zone. Mr Syrigos rejected the Turkish interpretation of the islands’ retreat over the continental coasts in cases of non -full continental shelf development, as well as the reference to closed and semi -closed seas for environmental issues.
Finally, commenting on opposition criticisms for delay in the issuance of the MSS, Mr Syrigos acknowledged the delay from 2011, pointing out that Law 4001/2011 amended how to imprint the continental shelf and now allowed the UN map to be sent.
