Ancient Olympia: In her hometown the head of Gripas repatriated by New York

In her birthplace, her Ancient Olympia Returned today (21.03.2025) in the afternoon the bronze head of the griffon repatriated by New York and is now part of the permanent collections of the Archaeological Museum.

The delivery of the particular archaeological treasure who returned from New York In Greece it was done by the Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoniwho spoke of a special day, both for the Ancient Olympiaas well as the Ministry of Culture.

As Ms Mendoni said, “After decades of absence, Gripas from the New York Metropolitan Museum returned to his natural space, to the Archaeological Museum, in Ancient Olympia.

A very important finding, which was violently removed and thanks to the coordinated efforts of the Archaeological Service, in particular the Department of Documentation and Protection of Polaric Goods of the Ministry of Culture, with the help of everyone but also with the positive disposition of the Metropolitan Museum of New York, a tribute to Olympian Zeus».

The bronze head of the grry, which adorned bronze tripod boiler and dates back to 650-625 BC, it is an excellent example of ancient Greek metalworking.
