Her holy island Deloswhich for millennia has been a cultural and religious center, comes back to life thanks to an innovative application augmented reality (AR)the CirculAR.
With a simple smartphone or tablet, visitors can now see the monuments of the archaeological site in their original form, as 3D representations. The Temple of Apollo, the House of the Naxians and the Andreas Lions digitally revived, based on scientifically proven content.
“Bridge of Time”
The application was developed in the framework of the European project APSIM, with the coordination of the research group I-SENSE of NTU (UPDATE) and the participation of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades, the AUTH and other bodies.
Dr. Angelos Amditiscoordinator of the project, told APE-MPE that the application works like “time bridge». As he said, “you don’t just see stones or foundations, you see stories, you see architecture”, turning the ordinary citizen “from a passive spectator to active explorer».
Game and other monuments
The application uses techniques gamification and algorithms that “read” the landscape and digitally place the monuments exactly where they were.
CirculAR technology is not limited only to Delos. Already, users can virtually tour his Episcopal Basilica Dio Pieria and in Filon’s box in Piraeus, a great building of 347 BC. digitally reconstructed based on an ancient inscription.
The application is available free for Android and iOS devices.
