Government has jeopardized personal data of up to 2.5 million citizens as hackers were able to invade the systems of the Hellenic Local Development and Local Government Company (ETA). According to information given after a SYRIZA-PS question, the leak includes sensitive elements such as names, birth dates, VAT, AMKA, IBAN bank accounts, as well as income and family data.
The attack, estimated to have lasted for several days in early March 2025, resulted in the encryption and possible interception of databases that support programs such as “promoting and supporting children for their integration into preschool education” and the pilot action “Nanny”.
Victims include applicants, spouses, minor children, as well as executives involved in the programs. The range of leakage is particularly large due to the ten -year period of data. EETAA confirmed the incident, referring to a violation of the confidentiality and availability of personal data.
Joint Communication by Digital Policy Police Police Tsapanidou and the SYRIZA – PA Digital Policy Department
The revelation of extensive leakage of sensitive personal data – VAT ID, AMKA, IBAN – Millions of Citizens from the cyberattack to EETAA, confirms in the most worrying way what we have long denounced: the New Democratic State Staff is not only inadequate.
From the first moment EETAA announced the collapse of its information systems, we have submitted a question to Parliament asking full information and guarantees for the protection of personal data. On April 1, we reinforced publicly, demanding clear answers from the government to the extent of the leak, the responsibilities that arise and the immediate measures it intends to take to protect citizens.
The New Democracy advertises a “digital transformation” limited to fancy apps and communication fireworks. Reality, however, is very different: citizens’ security is at constant danger and their dignity becomes a victim of government inactivity.
Protection of personal data is not a luxury, nor can it be considered a side loss of digital transition. It is a fundamental democratic right and a constitutional obligation of the state to ensure it.
SYRIZA – MS is not going to let this serious issue be buried. We will continue to exercise responsible, documented and institutional armor control. We are claiming a truly safe, transparent and democratic digital state, with citizens at the center.
