Akrita’s post on the fallout between Gutenberg and Documento: The book’s publisher is right, the political figure is bullshit

On the side of the publishing house Gutenberg about his dispute with the newspaper Document for the excerpts from his book Alexis Tsiprassays the SYRIZA member of parliament Elena Akrita.

“The publication of excerpts from a book before its official publication and without the permission of the author or the publisher constitutes a violation of copyright,” notes the SYRIZA MP, citing national as well as European legislation.

β€œAny journalistic reference to an unpublished book should be limited to information, not content.

In the summary of the work, the publisher of the book is right and the publisher of the newspaper is wrong,” says Ms. Akrita, emphasizing that the newspaper’s claims about a politician “are… pumpkins”. “The law does not exempt anyone” he notes characteristically.

Her post in detail

“-For the unpublished book of Alexis Tsipras, the publishing house Gutenberg sent an extrajudicial letter to Documento of Vaxevanis, which publishes excerpts. Since we are gleaning something from books, let’s say a couple of things.

– The publication of excerpts from a book before its official publication and without permission of the author or the publisher constitutes a violation of copyright, according to Law 2121/1993 amended by Law 4996/2022 which incorporates the European directives.
– The work is fully protected as unpublished, and unauthorized reproduction or distribution may result in civil and criminal penalties.
– Exceptions that allow quoting short excerpts for informational or critical purposes only apply to already published works.
– Accordingly, any journalistic reference to an unpublished book must be limited to information, not content.
In the summary of the work, the publisher of the book is right and the publisher of the newspaper is wrong. And if the latter does not comply with the restitution text of the court and the plaintiffs proceed with a lawsuit, they will pay whatever amount the court determines.
– And all this about a politician and the rest are pumpkins. The law does not exempt anyone.”
