A small reduction was reported in 2024 people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS Infection in our country, but the worry is that more than half were diagnosed with a significant delay, the National Public Health Organization (EDY).
As his final data on HIV/AIDS infection reveal in 2024, 650 people learned last year that they are carriers of the virus. This number is 4% smaller than the equivalent of 2023.
Of these patients, 53.7% were diagnosed late. The highest rates of delayed diagnosis were noted:
- In heterosexuals (61.4%)
- To intravenous addictive substances (60%) users
- To people over 50 years of age (64.4%)
The lowest percentages were reported to men with sexual intercourse with men (42.2%) and people aged 25-29 years (42.1%).
“Delayed diagnosis” means that the disease is perceived when it has evolved and the immune system has weakened. It is noteworthy that nearly 6% of new bodies (37 out of 650) had already displayed AIDS or expressed it within three months of their diagnosis.
The way of transmitting
Epidemiological data of 2024 also show that in more than one in three cases (at 37%) it does not report how the virus is transmitted.
Of the other patients, almost 31% are infected with sexual intercourse between men. Another 16% are infected with heterosexual sexual intercourse, while over 15% are contaminated by sharing intravenous addictive substances.
There were also two cases of vertical transmission. These are young people (ages 15 and 22 years old) who had been infected at birth. These cases were born in a foreign country.
The new report also shows that AIDS has increased significantly through the sharing of intravenous substances. The increase was 15% in 2024, compared to 2023. However, compared to 2022 it reached 51%.
Of the new HIV institutions, 57% were of Greek nationality. Another 38% were people from foreign country.
The age group where most new cases were recorded were young adults 30-39 years old.
