A record of waiting lists for cold surgeries is recorded in the National Health System, according to Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis, who referred to the success of the afternoon surgery measure and compared with the corresponding British NHS system.
In a post, the Minister of Health stressed that since the first day of his term in the ministry he had set a key goal of reducing waiting for Cold surgeries. As he noted: “From the first day I took over the leadership of the Ministry of Health, I set as one of our goals to reduce the waiting for cold surgery. We are doing extremely well with this index with huge improvement: from 80,000 surgeries over 4 months at that time, today we are below 40,000. “
Mr. Georgiadis specifically referred to the contribution of afternoon surgeries, referring to a further reduction in the waiting list:
“With the completion of our action with afternoon surgeries, we will go to low record numbers.”
Comparison with NHS and “export” of patients
In a characteristic comment, the Minister of Health compared the Greek situation with that of the United Kingdom, noting that the increase in waiting lists at NHS has led to a submission of patients abroad:
“If you think it’s something easy, see what they are forced to do to the NHS, where due to the large increase in their list, they decided to send their patients abroad so that they would not have to wait years.”
This report comes at a time when many European health systems are under pressure due to the accumulation of demands for post -pandemic surgery, while Greece is attempting rapid congestion by enhancing the afternoon of hospitals.
