Washington’s rules are violated by the World Trade Organization (WTO), according to its foreign ministry spokesman. RussiaMaria Sakharova, who condemns the decision of the President of USADonald Trump to impose tariffs worldwide and especially on China.
“The recent White House decision on customs duties (…) violates the fundamental rules of the WTO (World Trade Organization) and shows that Washington does not consider it to be bound by the rules of international commercial law,” the reporter said. It is one of the rare times that the Russian government criticized the US after the Russian -American approach launched in mid -February by US President Donald Trump after his return to power.
Panic was caused today (9.4.2025) on world markets after new sweeping customs duties imposed by the US in dozens of countries, with those involved in China exceeding 100%, and Beijing pledged to answer “with strict and strong” measures to defend its interests.
The tariff war between Washington and Beijing “becomes even more alarming as it concerns the two basic global economies,” Zaharova warned, condemning the “unilateral tariff protectionism” that Donald Trump has followed.
“We are closely monitoring the evolution of the situation,” the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman continued, also warning the “negative impact” on world markets.
The head of the Central Bank of Russia Elvira Nabiulina said, for her part, that the Russian Monetary Foundation “will take into account” this “new significant danger”.
“It is still very difficult to clarify where they will lead the world economy (these changes) and how they will affect Russia,” he added.
These new US customs duties are about 60 countries, including the 27 European Union countries, and came into force today at 07:00 Greek time.
