Did you know that in Greece there is a desert in which there is white sandtall dunes and minimal vegetation?
It is a place that when visiting it in the summer, you need to be armed with enough bottles of water to withstand dehydration and ruthless temperatures. Its length reaches 2 kilometers and width 500 meters.
We are in the Peloponnese, and specifically in Elafonissos, on its south side. In a large area, near Simos beach, there is this desert with rare white sand.
The beautiful monotony of the landscape is interrupted only by a few cedar plants, which are the only ones that can survive in this adverse environment.
Visitors to Simos Beach experience a small part of this special environment by walking to reach the beach.
The numerous and tall dunes have been formed by the winds, which often blow and vigorously in the area. On the one hand they accumulate the sand and form the dunes, on the other hand, they help with the waves in the erosion of the underlying rocks and to create new quantities of white sand.
Walking through the spooky and beautiful landscape you get a “fragrance” from the Sahara desert and you feel a fabric of how the environment will be there.
The big difference, of course, is that in this Greek desert, with comparatively less walking you reach the coveted sea and taste its cool.
