Pierrakakis: “Investments of € 584 million from non -state – non -profit universities”

«The steady development that Greece is seeking cannot be based only on numerical indicators. Must have the human resources in the center of, the education, the research and innovation. Only investment in knowledge works multiplier and leads to an economy resistant to swirls and judgments, “writes in today’s article. Kyriakos PierrakakisMinister of National Economy and Finance.

Subsequently, he says:

“The government last year made a courageous step by opening a window into the world of opportunities for knowledge. The submission of 12 applications for the establishment of non -state -non -profit universities, which are demanding to operate since September 2025, plus one for 2026, is to justify our decision to join with the needs of society, to fight with the ideals and stereotypes of Europe.

Although the 12 applications submitted meet the rigorous standards and receive the approval of the Higher Education National Authority and the Ministry of Education, the benefit to the country will be huge. Brain Drain’s reversal, attraction of foreign students, new jobs for the university potential that is growing abroad, new roads to research.

The value of investment in knowledge is invaluable. However, the cost of the expenditure that these 12 university -education legal entities intend to do is measurable for the Greek economy. Proposals submitted for investment in buildings and human resources reach 584 million euros for the next five years. EUR 243 million will be directed to campus and real estate that will house universities and EUR 341 million will be invested in human resources. Only one of the proposals concerns an investment of EUR 92 million for facilities and € 65 million for teaching and administrative staff. A second is an investment of 50m euros for buildings and 35m euros for human resources, always in the five years. Even those of these universities had some form of collaboration with domestic colleges under a cloudy status, the new law is obliged to acquire modern facilities, academics with parchment and to give money to scholarships and research.

Non -state universities will operate alongside the powerful public university, which is extroverted and attractive. The interest of renowned foreign academic institutions such as Yale, Columbia or Harvard investing in joint postgraduate programs with Greek public HEIs denied those who, defective and phobic, discounted that the project change in higher education would fail.

The result justifies our choices and decisions of Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The government has won the bet that the country needs. Education will become a key pillar of development and social progress. And we’re still at the beginning. “
