Coffee: In the burning coals businesses after the imposition of Trump duties

New increases in the price of coffee and economic disruption to production countries is foreseen because of the duties announced by the president of the USADonald Trump, Wednesday (2.4.2025).

Newsit.gr information from the Greek coffee market reports that businesses will be forced to proceed with new ratings, but so far they are waiting and monitoring developments. Anyway, Greece exports very small quantities of coffee to the US.

On the contrary, Germany and Italy will face the biggest problem, according to coffee market circles, because they have a large US market share.

The two countries are the key players in the European coffee market, while German coffee companies, such as Tchibo and Jacobs Douwe Egberts, and Italian companies such as Lavazza, Illy and Segafredo Zanetti, have a strong presence in the US market, mainly through espresso and coffee machinery.

At the same time, the same sources say that the US National Coffee Association (NCA) has asked the US government to exclude coffee from the duty process, as these duties may adversely affect the coffee industry in America, which is largely dependent on coffee imports. America is considered the largest consumer of the beverage in the world.

As for the “green coffee”, that is, the unprocessed coffee beans, the Trump duties, so far, have no impact on their price in Greece, according to sources.

It is worth noting that the main countries of coffee production, which supply Greece, are Brazil, Colombia, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Peru, Mexico, Nicaragua and Indonesia. However, the cost of raw materials worldwide is further incurred by climate crisis, increasing shipping costs, energy crisis and inflation.

It is recalled that on Wednesday (2.4.2025), the US announced 46% duty on imports from Vietnam, the world’s second largest coffee producer, and 32% duty on imports from Indonesia, the fourth largest producer. Cafe producers of Central and South America, such as Brazil and Colombia, received a 10%duty.

Vietnam is the third largest supplier of coffee in the US and exports mainly Robusta coffee, a type that is widely used for the preparation of instant coffee as well as ready -made cold drinks.
