Athens Concert Hall: The program for the 2021-2022 season


Completing the third decade of its strong presence in the Greek and international cultural scene, the Opera House Athens continues its course during the artistic period 2021-2022, with a program characterized by diversity and a desire to host in its halls new productions, great orchestras and important Greek and foreign soloists, to step into the modern music and to offer the opportunity to the spectators of all ages to experience live in its spaces unique cultural experiences.

This season he is creating two new rounds of events, the “Piano Masters”, with the participation of three brilliant stars of the piano firm – Gevgeny Kissin, Katia Buniatishvili, Ivo Pogoreltis – and the “Megaron Spring Festival”, a spring music festival dance, in which the famous Martha Graham Dance Company is present, but also internationally renowned soloists and ensembles, such as the violinist Yuri Basmet and the Moscow Soloists, the pianists Katia and Mariel Labeck, the percussion ensemble Percussions de Strasbourg and two Russian piano virtuosos, the acclaimed Grigory Sokolov and the up-and-coming Alexandra Dovan.

This year’s new productions include two new orders from the Athens Concert Hall: The new lyrical work of George Kouroupos “Hope of the Fatherland” in libretto by Ioulitas Iliopoulou, written for the 200 years since the Greek Revolution, and the musical historical drama “The Call of Prometheus – 1821 “in text-direction by Christoforos Christofis and music-conductor by Nikos Xanthoulis.

Dance lovers will have the opportunity to watch the world premiere of the work “Salema Revisited”, with which the international Greek choreographer Antonis Foniadakis celebrates the thirtieth anniversary of the Megaron. He also returns to the Alexandra Trianti Hall, with two new choreographies, the much-loved in Greece Nederlands Dans Theater, the contemporary dance group from the Netherlands that opened new avenues of expression through orchestral art.

As part of the popular “Great Orchestras-Great Performers” cycle, the legendary conductor Daniel Barenboim conducts the Berlin Staatskapelle in four concerts. Guests of the Palace will also be this, the artistic season, the Lucerne Festival Strings with the famous violinist Midori as well as the Philharmonia Orchestra of London, under the direction of the Finnish conductor Santos-Matias Rouvalis, with soloist one of the most award-winning young pianists, South Korean Song-Jin Cho.

The “Great Performers” circle also features the concerts of the Greek public’s favorite soprano Marlis Petersen, the renowned German baritone Matthias Gairne with the famous Christoph Essenbach on piano, but also two distinguished lyric singers, Elli soprano Dinara Alieva, in a special gala with the Athens State Orchestra. The program of the same cycle also includes the first appearances in Greece of the top Spanish organist Juan de la Rubia and the award-winning Emerson Quartet, which has been at the forefront of chamber music for 40 years, as well as the recitals of two great pianists with long international presence in the most important halls of the world, Maria Joao Pires and Mitsuko Uchida.

As for the Greek poetic discourse and music, they find their best expression through the lips of two special performers, Maria Farantouri and Dimitris Kataleifos, who honor Mikis Theodorakis with the musical performance “Return to poetry”, which is dedicated to the great Greek composer.
