Earthquake in Myanmar: Over 2,000 dead from 7.7 Richter – one week of national mourning

OR Myanmar will keep a minute silence tomorrow (01.04.2025) for the thousands of victims left behind by the devastating earthquake of 7.7 points on the Richter scale. The terrible earthquake, which hit the country, killed more than 2000 people, the military junta in power announced today (31.03.2025).

In Myanmar will stop every activity tomorrow for a minute at 12.51 and two seconds local time (08.21 hours of Greece), at the time when the 7.7 -magnitude earthquake hit the Asian country, became known by the junta in a press release.

Earlier, the military junta announced that it was preaching a week of national mourning in the country after the deadly earthquake, which killed more than 2,000 people on March 28, while hopes of finding survivors are declining time by time.

The period of mourning lasts until Sunday, April 6, the military reported in a press release, announcing that the flags would wave melting “as a sign of compassion for human casualties and damage caused by the extremely violent earthquake”.

Experts are fearing for additional thousands of dead in Myanmar, despite the mobilization of the international community, which has rushed to help this country plagued by the Civil War and lacking resources in front of the magnitude of the disaster.

There is still life in debris

The rescue teams unloaded four people, including one pregnant and a girl from leveled buildings in Mandalei, reported the Chinese news agency “Xinhua”.

Chinese rescuers, wearing red helmets, carried a survivor, who had wrapped in a thermal blanket, next to piles of damnations in a block of flats in Mandalei, according to images broadcast by the Chinese state television network “CCTV”.

Last Friday at noon, an earthquake measured 7.7 degrees hit the central Myanmar, and a few minutes later a 6.7 -magnitude earthquake was followed. The earthquake, unprecedented for decades in Myanmar, has caused scenes of chaos of up to 1,000 kilometers from the focus, such as in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, where at least 19 people have lost their lives, especially when collapsing a 30 -storey -height.

In Mandalei, the second largest city in Myanmar, which is close to the focus, rescue teams were currently working at a less intense pace compared to yesterday. The heat, with mercury reaching 40 degrees Celsius at noon, burden rescuers who attempt around the damaged buildings and accelerating the decomposition of corpses trapped under the ruins, complicating their identification.

As Mandalei’s 1,000 General Hospital was evacuated, hundreds of patients take care of outdoor areas. “It’s a very, very incomplete situation for the whole world,” said one member of the medical team. “We’re doing the best.”
