It is a national success to express Chevron, the American energy giant, for hydrocarbon research south of Crete! I know how important this development is, having personally served as Minister of Environment and Energy from 2019 to 2021.
This national success has very positive economic and geopolitical characteristics. And at the same time it is proof that our country, with the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis, is pursuing a policy in this field with seriousness and effectiveness. This is the way we choose to defend the interests of our country. Without big words, but with specific projects!
Chevron’s initiative recognizes the Greek EEZ in the region. At the same time, the important role our country has as an energy hub and as a reliable investment destination is recognized. From 2020 onwards, due to the financial impacts of the coronovation crisis and the falling of the oil prices at the time, the investigation of hydrocarbons internationally had a blow. Today things are different. However, the attraction of Chevron to Greece was not a very simple matter. Richard Skoufias and Aris Stefatos, who, on my own decision, were placed in 2020 in the then EDEA (today EDOEP: Hellenic Hydrocarbons and Energy Resources Management Society), deeply aware of this field, and both, have systematically attempted to attract all of the chevron. I still remember that in the individual discussions I had with some other market players about the theoretical possible expression of interest by Chevron, almost no one believed it. And yet, scalp and wreath managed to do their plan. And the Mitsotakis government who trusted them today can say that Greece is also going on in this area with plan and determination. Strengthening our economy and country!
We have never suspended the mining program, as I saw some claim. We have never said that the mining would be about the “treasure of the grandfather”, as some others claim, who will allow us, by making mines, to become all Greeks the “Sheikhs” of the area.
