OR Ukraine tries to keep the diplomatic balance. According to Rustem Umerov, secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, Ukrainian authorities continue “at a technical level” to analyze in detail the American proposal to end the conflict with Russia.
However, he calls on Western partners to respect Ukraine’s position: “Our principles are clear: sovereignty, security of our citizens and a just peace,” he stressed via Telegram, reminding that all proposals are being considered, but Ukraine expects the same attitude towards its own positions, especially towards the demands made by Russia.
The US-backed plan — a version of which Reuters has seen — calls for, among other things, Kiev to cede the entire Donbas region and significantly reduce the size of its military.
A proposal of high intensity, when Volodymyr Zelensky met on Thursday night in Kiev with the American Secretary of the Army, Daniel Driscoll. Washington is also expected to present the plan to European Union ambassadors in the Ukrainian capital.
Silence from Moscow
In Moscow, the Kremlin says it has not been informed of any Ukrainian intention to discuss the “Trump plan”. According to the RIA news agency, Russia has not received any message indicating that Kiev is ready for negotiations.
The US document, designed as a “road map” to ending the war, includes Ukraine’s recognition of Russian control over the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, as well as Moscow’s return to the G8 format. The White House says the proposal was discreetly drafted over nearly a month by special envoy Steve Witkoff and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Volodymyr Zelensky, for his part, says he will discuss the plan “in the next few days” with the US president — a sign that there is a cautious attitude in Kiev, but also intense diplomatic pressure around a proposal that could completely reshape the balance of the war.
