The attack was lightning-fast and extremely violent: Dmytro Chaban, a 37-year-old Ukrainian from Odessa, was driving his car in Turkey when targeted by bandits.
In Turkey, the robbers smashed the window of his vehicle, shot at him and grabbed a bag containing 35,000 euros before fleeing on a scooter. Shocked, he chased them and hit them with the car. The two men were killed on the spot.
The Turkish court recognized that Çaban was the victim of an armed attack, but found him guilty. He was initially sentenced to life in prison, but the sentence was reduced to 25 years after the judge recognized the mitigating factor of “wrongful provocation”.
