In a discussion held at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in Singapore, the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis analyzed the course of the Greek economy, Europe’s attitude towards the war in Ukraine, Greece’s relations with the United States, but also the country’s role as a connecting link between Europe and Asia. The debate on the future of Europe with the British editor-in-chief of Bloomberg News, John Micklethwaite, was broadcast live by ertnews.gr.
The Prime Minister emphasized that Greece “has made a remarkable comeback”, pointing to primary surpluses, continuous improvement in debt and a growth rate that exceeds the European average. “We have proven that the crisis belongs to the past and that the country can have reliable governments,” he said characteristically. Referring to the stability of the political system, he underlined how the government has a large parliamentary majority, that the next elections are scheduled for 2027, while the ruling party is significantly ahead in the polls. He admitted that the cost of living remains a challenge, but noted that pre-election commitments have been implemented and that the new budget includes relief measures to address punctuality. He also recalled that the government proceeded with difficult but necessary reforms, such as in the pension system.
“Europe woke up to the war in Ukraine”
In response to a question about developments in the war, Mr. Mitsotakis said that Europe has learned important lessons from the Ukrainian crisis. He emphasized that there is no official information about a possible plan of Donald Trump regarding the end of the war, while he clarified that no agreement can exist without the participation of Ukraine. He also pointed out that European countries must continue to financially support Kyiv, while each state must promote reforms in order to shape a common European pace.
“I strongly believe in transatlantic relations”
Regarding Greece-US relations, and to a question about Trump’s preference for authoritarian leaders like Erdogan, the Prime Minister called the United States a strategic partner of Greece. He emphasized that the cooperation between the two countries has proven to be effective, especially in the energy sector. Regarding Greek-Turkish, he underlined that the goal is to have a dialogue about the International Law of the Sea without tensions. “My responsibility is to strengthen the country’s defense capabilities. We have a deterrent attitude towards any possible threat,” he noted.
Greece as a bridge between Europe and Asia
Mr. Mitsotakis also referred to his meeting with its counterpart in Singapore, underlining the common values of the two countries in the free economy and the Rule of Law. He emphasized that there is significant room for cooperation between Asia and Europe and that Greece wishes to develop closer relations with ASEAN countries. “Singapore has a critical role in the region and Greece can act as a bridge to strengthen Eurasian ties,” he said.
