With a clear message that “the work does not stop at the opening”the Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis marked the government’s intentions for Chios Hospital, inaugurating the new Emergency Department (ED), in the presence of representatives of the island’s health agencies and local government officials.
Increase in patients and productivity
During his speech, the Minister of Health presented detailed data that demonstrate, as he mentioned, the continuous upgrading of the hospital’s services, emphasizing: “We treated in the first half of 2025, 3.9% more people compared to the second half of 2024. We saw 5.6% more outpatient cases.”
In the field of surgeries, there was a doubling, from 721 in the previous semester to 1,443 in the current one, while in the nursing departments the number of patients increased by 32.2%, which, according to Adonis Georgiadis, demonstrates the efficiency of the administration and staff.
Full coverage of qualifiers – Message to challengers
The Minister of Health made reference to the fullness of the positions of specialist doctors, noting that for the first time Chios Hospital has 100% coverage.
“No resident chooses to go to a bad hospital. The fact that we have full coverage is the biggest proof of the quality of the hospital,” he reported.
Equipment upgrade and new projects through NSRF
The Minister announced that the completion of the study of the North Aegean Region is expected within November, which will allow the promotion through NSRF of the building interventions in the Pathology Clinic, as well as the overall upgrade of the hospital’s image.
In addition, he referred to the imminent enrichment of medical technological equipment, including psychiatric equipment, integrating these moves into the broader strategic planning for a more functional and modern hospital.
New recruitments and artificial intelligence in TEP
Special mention was made of the staffing of the TEP, with Adonis Georgiadis to state that one doctor is already serving and a second one is expected in two weeks, while he assured that additional recruitments will be made.
At the same time, he underlined the Ministry’s intention to include the TEP of Chios in the artificial intelligence implementation programs, as has already been done in Larissa and Nice.
“The TEP is not only doctors and nurses, it is technology, it is equipment, it is data that is analyzed and predicted, so that we do not arrive late to the crisis”, he stated.
Dialogue with agencies and recognition of staff
The Minister pointed out that during his visit he met with all the associations and workers, assuring that: “There was no one who refused the dialogue. Everyone agrees that the main problem is the lack of nursing staff and certain specialties.”
He did not fail to warmly thank the medical and nursing staff for their efforts and to congratulate the new management of the hospital, stressing that he practically supports their every step.
Funding and call for private sponsorships
Realistically, Mr Adonis Georgiadis he admitted that the resources of the state budget are not sufficient for all needs, calling on the Governor to also seek private sponsorships to cover deficits, emphasizing that the Ministry will assist where needed.
Concluding his speech, the Minister described Chios Hospital as one of the best regional hospitals in the country, acknowledging the challenges, but asserting that the work that has been achieved leaves no room for doubt.
They welcomed him with slogans and shouts
Citizens and representatives of the island’s agencies welcomed Adonis Georgiadis to the General Hospital of Chios “Skylitsio” on Wednesday morning with slogans and loud applause, as part of the inauguration of the Emergency Department (ED).
Dozens of protesters had gathered outside the entrance of the Hospital, holding banners and shouting slogans against the government’s health policy.
