The abolition of the special status enjoyed by Ukrainians in Germanythe government partners (CDU/CSU, SPD) decided, according to BILD.
According to the decision of the government coalition, Ukrainians who arrived in Germany after April 1, 2025 change their legal status and will henceforth be treated as asylum seekers, they will therefore receive less benefits.
There are currently 1.1 million Ukrainians living in Germany, who receive 563 euros/month if they are single, with the state covering rent, heating, etc.
However, the legislation for asylum seekers provides aid of 196 euros and additional housing, etc. The ultimate goal of the change in treatment is to motivate as many Ukrainians as possible to work, as until now there are comparatively few who have joined the labor market.
Initially, the plan called for all Ukrainians to be retroactively excluded from the citizen’s allowance, but there was strong resistance from municipalities and states. “The bureaucratic effort would be too much, it’s not worth it. T
the important thing is that we solved it,” a senior official of the governing coalition told BILD, following the agreement reached between Interior Minister Alexander Dobrid (CSU) and Labor Minister Berbel Bass (SPD).
