The leader of its Socialist Party seeks a compromise with the government to make the budget work of FranceOlivier Faure, removing the threat that could overthrow him prime minister Sebastien Lecorny.
France’s centre-left party had previously threatened to use its crucial National Assembly seats in no-confidence votes that would force the prime minister to resign if the government did not meet its demands for radical wealth taxation.
According to Bloomberg, the debate on the revenue portion of the 2026 budget bill, in which Lecorny will participate, is expected to culminate on Friday (11/14/2025), as lawmakers debate proposals to tax the wealthy.
“I think he definitely has something to offer the country, I don’t know what he wants to offer and whether it will be enough, but we are clearly at a turning point,” Fore said shortly before the National Assembly debates began, adding: “I think he wants to succeed in this venture, and so do I.”
A compromise on the revenue side of the budget would mark significant progress and could prevent another government collapse, an outcome that would likely lead to early elections. That prospect has rattled bond markets, where sales of French assets have already driven up the country’s borrowing costs in recent months.
The Socialists, whose abstention saved Lecorny in a no-confidence vote earlier this month, said if the revenue part of the bill was rejected, spending cuts would be inevitable and the government would face censure.
