Modernization of 7,030 existing ones
The new residential program of Armed Forces includes the construction of 10,454 new homes and the modernization of the existing 7,030 homes so that in total, over a period of 15 years, there will be 17,484 modern homes for executives. This is what the Minister of National Defense said today, Wednesday, November 12, Nikos Dendias, in a presentation held at the Ministry of National Defense.
Mr. Dendias, among other things, noted that “the funding will come from own resources” while, as he emphasized, the program is governed by “interdisciplinary and transparency”.
“Target,” he said. “is to provide accommodation to all members of the Armed Forces who are transferred to a place they do not want. We consider this to be an obligation of the Greek state.

The construction of more than 10,454 new homes is divided into three phases:
• Phase 1: Construction of more than 5,100 for all staff in Evros and Eastern Aegean islands for the period up to 2030. The first phase started in 2024 and by December 2026 more than 1,059 residences will be delivered.
• Phase II: Construction of more than 2,623 houses for all staff in Aegean, Crete and Thrace and 50% of Attica for the period 2031-2035.
• Phase C: Construction of more than 2,731 houses in 100% of the territory by 2040.
Accordingly, the modernization of 7,030 existing military buildings is divided into three phases:
• Phase I: Renovation – maintenance of 2,520 homes until 2030 in Thrace, Aegean islands and 50% of Crete.
• Phase II: Renovation – maintenance of 2,527 homes in Macedonia, Attica and 50% of Crete, from 2031-2035.
• Phase C: Renovation – maintenance of 1,983 houses in the rest of the territory for the period 2036-2040.
“Along with the new residences”, Mr. Dendias pointed out, “the 7,030 existing residences of the Armed Forces will be modernized.”


Financing
The financing of the Housing Program is fully guaranteed. In detail, the resources required reach 1.7 billion euros, of which 1.44 billion come from own resources, while 260 million euros come from resources of the Ministry of Social Cohesion and the Public Investment Program.
With reference to the amount that will come from the ministry’s own resources, 1.27 billion will finance new constructions, 120 million maintenance and renovations of existing structures, while 50 million euros new social structures and maintenance.
Mr. Dendias emphasized the fact that, for reasons of transparency, a “standardization for cost containment” process will be followed in new constructions and renovations, while he also proceeded to present sample complexes that will include one, two and three bedroom houses.


In particular, regarding the new structures, he underlined that six new nurseries will be built with the capacity to host 252 infants and toddlersin order to cover 100% the needs of the executives. Also, 6 buildings of existing kindergartens are being reconstructed – expanded to accommodate 70 infants in addition to 180 toddlers.
Also, three new living support complexes for Armed Forces veterans, 50 one-bedroom apartments will be built, while medical support will also be provided.
The Minister of National Defense reiterated that it is a priority to “improve the living conditions of the members of the Armed Forces” as well as the elderly retirees.
In addition, as he announced, 4 new student residence complexes are being built for cadet officers studying at universities that will accommodate 120 students, who participate in the Special Tenure Programs.


Military Family Support
In addition, Mr. Dendias announced family basket support initiative for military families.
Specifically, on average the benefit will reach 20% to 23% compared to market prices in supermarkets.
As he clarified, “all units and military stations will be supplied centrally to reduce costs.”
A total of 26 Army and 5 Navy stations will be included where military families can get cheaper products.
“We have a holistic approach for executives, which includes better salaries, better conditions with a defined career for executives, free housing, a cheap supermarket, care for children, a good health system from military hospitals and also care for elderly retirees,” explained the minister.
In this way, as he said, “we demonstrate the interest of the State and society for the officers of the Armed Forces”.
“We need the best of the Greeks in the Armed Forces”, concluded Mr. Dendias.
