Mitsotakis to Christodoulidis: It is very important to coordinate our governmental work

We have learned a lot from the Greek government in matters of internal governance, said the Cypriot president

The prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met at Megaros Maximos with the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulidisin the context of the work of the 3rd Cyprus-Greece intergovernmental session.

“It is very important to be able to better coordinate our governmental work, especially in view of the very important moment for Cyprus, which is the assumption of the presidency of the European Union in the first half of 2026. So we will have very important things to discuss today and we are happy to welcome once again such a large representation, under your leadership, of the Cypriot Council” said the Prime Minister in the dialogue they had at the beginning of the meeting.

“We have succeeded, primarily due to the excellent cooperation we have on a personal level, to strengthen our relations beyond strictly national issues, in all these issues that concern the daily lives of our citizens” noted the Cypriot President.

“Expressing the Cypriot side, I want to publicly state that we have learned a lot from the important initiatives of the Greek government in matters of internal governance, and I want to publicly thank you for the fact that this cooperation exists. We use know-how that is used here in Greece” he added.

At the beginning of their meeting, Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Nikos Christodoulidis had the following dialogue:

Kyriakos Mitsotakis: “Again, welcome. Our 3rd Intergovernmental. Let me congratulate you again for the excellent initiative you have undertaken and I think it is already bearing very important fruits in terms of better coordination of our governments, in addition to the close communication we have and the regular personal contact.

I think it is very important to be able to better coordinate our governmental work, especially in view of the very important moment for Cyprus, which is the assumption of the Presidency of the European Union in the first half of 2026.

So we will have very important things to discuss today and we are happy to welcome once again such a large representation, under your leadership, of the Cypriot Council of Ministers”.

Nikos Christodoulidis: “Dear Kyriakos, we have succeeded, primarily due to the excellent cooperation we have on a personal level, to strengthen our relations beyond the strictly national issues, in all these issues that concern the daily lives of our citizens.

Expressing the Cypriot side, I want to state publicly that we have learned a lot from the important initiatives of the Greek government in matters of internal governance and I want to thank you publicly for the fact that this cooperation exists. We use know-how that is used here in Greece.

In addition to these, our meeting also takes place 50 days before the assumption of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. A Presidency that will work on the one hand to strengthen the strategic autonomy of the European Union, all that we discuss in the European Council, but at the same time – and here I believe that Cyprus and Greece, Greece and Cyprus have a very important role to play – to strengthen the relations of the European Union with the wider Middle East.

But at the same time, with our own initiatives, as demonstrated by the very successful – and I want to congratulate you publicly – meeting of the three Ministers of Energy last week here, with the presence of the United States as well, to find points of convergence in the relations of the European Union with the United States. With our own initiatives, with initiatives of Cyprus and Greece.

I look forward to discussing all these issues and once again thank you very much for your hospitality.”
