Commercial operation of five additional flexible gas turbine units at the Group’s power plants has begun PPC in Rhodes and Crete, having already contributed to ensuring the energy sufficiency of the islands during this summer season. The next station is Chios, where another new gas turbine unit is expected to be put into commercial operation within the year, with the total power of these units exceeding 220MW.
At the same time, the installation of two new gas turbine units in Lesvos with a total capacity of 29MW is in full progress, which are expected to start their trial operation at the beginning of 2026, while in December 2024 two new gas turbine units were put into operation in Santorini as well, as part of PPC’s investment actions to strengthen the energy sufficiency of the Greek islands.
The new, state-of-the-art, dual-fuel gas turbine units have been designed to increase the production capacity of the stations on the islands, thus ensuring their energy sufficiency, while their use also contributes to the reduction of the final expenses of YKO. The replacement of heavy oil (HFO) by diesel (LFO), combined with the modern systems for reducing emissions of gaseous pollutants and particles, which the new gas turbine units have, contribute to the reduction of the environmental footprint. Finally, the noise level of the new gas turbine units, which does not exceed 65db at the station boundaries, is lower than that of the existing units, further enhancing the environmental benefits
Two additional new power projects are underway in island Greece
With the aim of further strengthening the energy shield of the islands, PPC Group continues to invest in modern, flexible production units that contribute to the seamless coverage of their growing energy needs. The Group’s plan for the next year includes two additional projects in island Greece, in Chios and Soroni Rhodes, where it is planned to replace existing units with modern gas turbines, which fully comply with the requirements of the environmental legislation of the European Union and Greece.
