Just 18% of citizens in Germany would approve of the chancellor’s eventual decision Friedrich Mertz to seek his re-election, according to poll.
In the Forsa Institute poll on behalf of the RTL network, 73% of respondents said they would not approve of a possible decision by Christian Democratic Party (CDU) leader Friedrich Merz to run in the 2029 federal election in Germany.
Even among supporters of the Christian Union (CDU/CSU), 41% of the 1,002 citizens polled oppose Mertz’s potential bid for a second term as chancellor, compared to 47% who would approve.
Regarding the age of Friedrich Merz, who will celebrate his 70th birthday on Tuesday, 52% of those polled expressed the opinion that it would be better if the chancellor were younger.
