The Athenian “throne” was ascended by Novak Djokovic! The Serbian tennis player had a great “battle” with Lorenzo Muzzetti in the final of the first Hellenic Championshipbut pulled off a 2-1 set upset victory (4-6, 6-3, 7-5) to claim the Telecom Center tournament title.
After a thrilling game, decided after a series of breaks at the end of the third set, Novak Djokovic managed to bend the outstanding Lorenzo Muzzetti and take the 250th Hellenic Championship trophy.
In an epic “duel” that lasted almost 3 hours, the tennis fans who filled the Telecom Center in Athens, were delighted to see two top tennis players “fight” until the end, before the Serbian tennis legend took the victory with a break in the break, in a dramatic finale to the tournament.
The game
Muzzetti entered the game better and “pressured” Djokovic from the beginning, finding triple break points in his opponent’s second service game. The Serbian tennis legend “fought” to prevent the break and erased two break points, but the Italian succeeded with… the third and took a 3-1 lead, making an important “step” for the first set. Djokovic was unable to respond afterwards and it was Muzzetti who found another break point, which he did not take advantage of this time. Even so, he was able to serve for 1-0 and did so, despite Nole’s “pressure” until the last point.

In the second set, Djokovic started to serve better and didn’t leave room for Muzzetti, who in turn managed to hold his own serve until 4-3. At that point, the Serbian tennis legend found his first break point of the game and reached the break after an improbable rally, which resulted in match point. Djokovic served like this, immediately after, for the set, but had to “erase” a break point from the Italian, to “write” 6-3 and tie the set at 1-1.

However, the final was led to a third and decisive set, where Djokovic had the psychology in his favor and took advantage of it to find a break first and make… a victory jump in Athens. The Serbian tennis player led 3-1, but Muzzetti responded in the sixth game and with his own break leveled the match at 3-3.

A sensational “duel” between the two tennis players followed, with Djokovic finding a new break, but Muzzetti “answering” again, so that the two reached 5-5. The Serb missed the first chance to “close” the set on his serve, but after another break of his own, he was given a second chance to do the same and he succeeded! Djokovic reached 7-5 and “bent” Muzzetti to win 2-1 and capture the first Hellenic Championship.
