One of the main issues of the political confrontation in Italy in recent days it is the possibility of taxing citizens who have quite high incomes and assets, with the Italian prime minister Georgia Meloni to take a clear position.
In a categorical way, Giorgia Meloni responded, today (08.11.2025) on social media, to the request of a large part of the opposition in Italy to give a “green light” to a special tax for large properties.
“The approval of a special measure for the taxation of large properties and deposits comes back, from time to time, in the proposals of the left. It is reassuring to know that, with the right in government, these proposals will never be implemented“, the head of the government of Rome wrote to “X”.
In the past few days, the secretary of the center-left Democratic Party, Elie Schlein, had declared that her political force “is in favor of taxation, at the European level, for those who have millions, for the billionaires”.
The secretary of the “Italian Left” Nicola Fratogianni, for his part, replied to Meloni that “it is not at all reassuring that with the right in government the number of citizens in poverty has increased and by a million Italians who do not go to the doctor for necessary treatments”.
Maurizio Ladini, at the same time, secretary of the country’s largest trade union, Cgil, proposed the special taxation of large assets of more than 2 billion euros “with a tax of 1%, in order to secure around 26 billion euros, with which health, education and the labor sector can be supported.”
The former prime minister and current secretary of the “Five Stars” Giuseppe Conte, on the contrary, believes that “the overtaxation of large properties will not provide the necessary resources to be able to solve the major problems facing Italy” and for this reason “he did not adopt it when he was prime minister”.
