Sevi Voloudakis: “Legal immigration is a tool” – Strict controls and “Education” the answer to gun ownership in Crete

The situation in Crete

Asked about the strong immigration pressures that Crete received (mainly from Libya), Mrs. Voloudaki assured that today the picture is “stable and controlled”. He attributed the improvement to the measures maritime border surveillance in collaboration with the Coast Guard.

Joining with “mutual responsibility”

Referring to the integration policy, the deputy minister emphasized that the government’s philosophy is based on “logic of mutual responsibility”: the state provides the structures and the beneficiaries actively participate, learning the language and acquiring professional skills.

He also clarified that the allowances they should not be a “permanent dependency mechanism” and therefore no longer are connected with her active participation in integration and job-finding actions.

The problem of gun ownership

Mrs. Voloudaki also took a position on the recent events in Crete, stressing that it is “unfair” to characterize an entire island by individual incidents.

He admitted, however, the need for a new, stricter and more coherent policy. The direction, as he said, is the tightening controls and the uniform application of the law without “specifics”. Above all, however, he emphasized the role of prevention: “Prevention starts from education — from the new generation that needs to learn that gun ownership it is not an identity elementbut risk factor».
