The earthquake was felt in Istanbulthe coasts of Asia Minor as well as some Aegean islands. According to information and videos published on social media, in many cities of Turkey, there has been significant damage to houses and buildings, while some of them have collapsed.
Authorities called on citizens to follow official announcements without panicking.
The strong earthquake occurred 8 kilometers southeast of Sidirgi at a depth of 10.0 kilometers and was recorded at 21:48 (Greece time).
The tremors were widely felt in Smyrna, Istanbul, Bursa and the surrounding areas.

In fact, in the same area, at least 20 successive smaller aftershocks of magnitude 3 to 4.6 occurred within 40 minutes.
Residents of the Sindirgi district and the surrounding area fled their homes and headed for open spaces after the quake, while groups issued warnings of possible aftershocks.
Experts said there is no risk of a major earthquake due to the faults and geological structure in the area. The earthquake in Sindirgi, however, caused intense activity, especially in mountainous areas and on the surface.
At the same time, emergency teams were sent to the area and are on foot taking stock of the damage.
So far there have been no reports of casualties or injuries.
Statements by the Turkish Ministers of Interior and Finance
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said in a statement: “An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 occurred in the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir. All the teams of AFAD and our relevant institutions immediately started field investigations regarding the earthquake, which was also felt in the surrounding provinces. I wish our citizens who were affected by the earthquake. May Allah protect our country and nation from calamity.”
Immediately after the earthquake, Family Minister Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş also made a statement, saying: “I express my best wishes to our citizens who were affected by the earthquake that occurred in Balikesir Şıdirgi and was felt in the surrounding provinces. Psychosocial Support Teams begin field work immediately. May Allah protect our country and our noble nation from all calamities.”
It is recalled that in 2023, a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake resulted in over 53,000 deaths in Turkey and caused numerous disasters throughout the country.
