The NBA is slowly trying to recover from the scandal illegal betting which broke out -after the arrests of the FBI- and is trying to cooperate with the authorities and -at the same time- to take the necessary steps, in order not to eliminate the specific phenomenon that “damaged” the prestige of the League.
In order to strengthen its integrity, the NBA informed its 30 teams – via an official memo – that the League is reviewing its policies regarding injury reporting, personnel education and training, and the monitoring of betting activity.
According to the memo obtained by ESPN and reporting by Sams Sarania, the NBA points out that the unusual betting activity on Terry Rozier’s “unders” in the March 2023 game was detected in real time, as the bets were legal.
However, according to the same source, the league believes further legal and regulatory intervention is needed to protect the integrity of the league and its affiliated leagues.
We remind you that Terry Rozier of the Miami Heat was arrested – among others – on suspicion of faking an injury for the benefit of bettors while playing for the Charlotte Hornets.
NBA memo to its teams: “While the unusual betting on Terry Rozier’s “unders” in the March 2023 game was detected in real time because the bets were placed legally, we believe there is more that can be done from a legal/regulatory perspective to protect the integrity of the NBA… https://t.co/tagjQsd7Vr

The league stresses that proposition-style bets, which involve the performance of individual players, carry an increased risk of breach of integrity and should be more strictly controlled.
According to the memo, the new policies will focus on strengthening internal and external monitoring programs to identify suspicious bets.
