Regarding the government amendment regarding the Monument to the Unknown Soldier and the possible reactions that may be caused tomorrow, during the parade in the center of Athens for October 28, by people who have expressed their opposition to it, spoke Thanos Pleuris.
In an interview he gave on the radio of Parapolitics, the Minister for Immigration and Asylum said: “I see, regardless of the amendment, some parties tolerate, possibly even encourage, a scenario of memoranda, when government MPs came out and there were groups that wanted to target them. I believe, we will see this in the next period. I believe we will see left-wing guys, hooded, appearing everywhere, having a social guise that may have resonance and sensitivity, but in reality there will be a logical escalation behind it. I am sure that tomorrow, politically provocative persons who move there, such as Mrs. Konstantopoulou and some others, will try to put on various shows. I believe that the monument of the Unknown Soldier must be protected and the scale is in favor of the monument”.
For the way the government handled the issue of the specific amendment and the discussions that developed in relation to the ministry’s position of National Defense, Mr. Pleuris said: “The protection of the Monument is done by the Police and that is clear. The issue is how to render the Monument clean. We had reached the point where counter-tents were being set up. The matter of cleanliness belonged to the Municipality of Athens. The Municipality proved that it could not respect the monument and render it as it was, so the responsibility passed to the army. Mr. Dendias signed the amendment and from the announcements that followed with Mr. Doukas, he took a clear position that the Ministry of National Defense will do what is necessary. Any discussion that took place was more in the realm of parapolitics than politics. And Mr. Dendias and the entire government believe that with such an initiative, we should have the image that the monument should have.”
