China: Call for an end to trade wars ahead of Xi-Trump meeting

Ending the war of duties asked today (27.10.25) Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, stressing that “a multipolar world is emerging”. His statement came a few days before the long-awaited meeting of its president ChinaXi Jinping, with his American counterpart, Donald Trump.

The two leaders are expected to meet on Thursday (30.10.25) in South Korea, with the aim of reaching a deal that would end the long-running tariff trade war between the US and China.

Speaking at an economic forum in Beijing, Wang called for “an end to the politicization of economic and trade issues, the artificial fragmentation of global markets and the resort to trade wars and tariff battles” in a clear push towards Washington’s protectionist policies.

“Frequent withdrawal from agreements and breach of commitments, while enthusiastically forming blocs and cliques, have exposed multilateralism to unprecedented challenges. The course of history cannot be reversed. A multipolar world is emerging,” the Chinese minister pointed out.

His remarks coincided with Trump’s tour of Asia, with the next stop in Japan and culminating in a meeting with Xi on the sidelines Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in the city of Gyeongju, South Korea.

The American president appeared optimistic that there will be a “good deal” with China, while the US Treasury Secretary, Scott Besant, assured that the two sides are close to a compromise on rare earths and Chinese purchases of US soybeans.

On the Chinese side, International Trade Representative Li Chenggang confirmed that Beijing and Washington have already reached a “preliminary agreement”.
