In an interview given by the Minister of National Economy and Finance Kyriakos Pierrakakis On the Lawandorder.gr website, he talked about new increases in their salaries uniform But also when the beneficiaries will see these increases.
Kyriakos Pierrakakis emphasized that if the 2024 increase of 70 euros per month, and family allowances and the allowance of special conditions, the 2025 and 2026 increases that have been announced, cumulatively the increase in salaries to uniforms exceeding EUR 300 per month.
In detail the interview of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Kyriakos Pierrakakis:
Mr Minister, the compensation for the nightlife of the uniforms increased by 20% from 1.1.2025 and reaches 3.33 euros per hour. However, it is unhealthy and hard work, in accuracy and inflation conditions. Many uniforms call it “crumbs”. Is there an intention for a more meaningful increase?
Since January to the present, there have been substantial interventions to support security executives. Interventions that actually recognize the difficulty, danger and importance of their mission. Since July 2025, the danger allowance has been paid 100 euros per month. At the TIF, the prime minister announced the new payroll for the police, the Fire Brigade and the Port Authority, which provides for average additional increases of around 110 euros a month, while executives with many years of service exceeds 200 euros per month.
Those who serve in the Security Forces will also benefit from the new tax reform, which is implemented since January 1, 2026. A pair of 20,000 euros each and two children saves 1,200 euros a year, while with three children the benefit reaches 2,600 euros. In addition, new police, ports and firefighters up to 25 years old will have zero income tax, while for those who are up to 30 years the rate is limited to 9%. Further, in April there will be an additional increase, depending on the increase in the minimum wage.
Supporting people who serve at the forefront of security is a steady choice. Because the security of the citizens and the recognition of those who guarantee it are the foundation of a fair and strong society.
You said the new payroll foresees increases of 100 to 200 euros. However, real losses of uniforms over the last decade have exceeded 30%.
They are not the first increases made. This government has deferred the State’s payroll after 14 years. Recall the horizontal increase of 2024 by 70 euros per month, accompanied by increases in family allowances and the allowance of particular conditions. If you add the increases of 2025 and 2026 I mentioned above, cumulatively the rise in salary in the security forces exceeds 300 euros per month.
Is the new payroll indeed a recovery of injustices or an accounting adjustment?
It is a fair reform. It corrects chronic injustice and rationalize earnings in a simple, clean and predictable way.
Now, the basic salary is solely linked to the years of service, with 20 common levels for all bodies, while the grade of each strain is attributed through an increase of 1.00 to 1.23. Thus, every one knows exactly how his salary will evolve throughout his career and receive increases both on the basis of years of service and on the basis of grades.
For example, a 25 -year -olds with 4 years of service will receive an increase in gross monthly earnings of 115 euros, from 1,515 euros to 1,630 euros. Its net earnings, taking into account a significant reduction in income tax in January 2026 for young people up to 25 years old, are increased from 1,100 to 1,300 euros, ie an increase of EUR 200 per month.
42 -year -olds with 20 years of service will receive an increase in gross monthly earnings of 146 euros, from € 1,775 to € 1,921.
This change concerns more than 75,000 security executives and the fiscal footprint exceeds € 121 million a year. It is an investment in the recognition of people who are at the forefront daily.
The new payroll is based on a single grade and grade rates. What guarantees that no distortions or injustices will be created again?
This is precisely the central point of the new payroll, that there is a definitive end to the distortions of the past. In the past there were different rates of wage development. One could stay for many years in the same salary step and the ratio of wage, years and grade was not linear.
Today, everyone is moving in steady steps. Every two or three years, depending on the years of service, they go up to the next step and receive an automatic salary increase, as well as an increase when they rise to a higher degree of the hierarchy. In addition, the liability allowance increased significantly, from 25% to 100%, with amounts of up to 600 euros for the House Chief and 400 euros for senior officers. It is a recognition of the responsibility of administration and the gravity of their role.
When will they see the money in their accounts?
The increases are in place by the October payroll. The uniforms will see them in their accounts next period, after the law is passed and as soon as possible, depending on the ability of the bodies’ financial services to complete the procedures in time. In any case, everyone will receive the amounts retroactive from the start date. This concerns all security forces: the police, the port and the Fire Brigade.
The 130 -euro border allowance concerns only specific services in ten prefectures in northern Greece. Doesn’t this create an unfair separation?
The border allowance was a request for many years on the part of the police and we tried to find the money to satisfy it. It is granted by objective, geographical and operational criteria, based on the proximity to the border, in proportion to what applies to the units in the same areas of the Armed Forces. The beneficiaries will be selected by the decision of the Chief of the Hellenic Police, who knows the real conditions better.
Mr Dendias made a rationalization at the Ministry of National Defense, with adjustments and corrections to the wage framework of the military. Why, in your opinion, have the relevant ministries of the three security forces, namely protection, shipping and island policy and climate crisis and civil protection?
A finance minister must always seek a total and fair rationalization throughout the State. However, this must be done with realism and respect for the particularities of each sector.
In the Armed Forces, Mr Dendias actually proceeded to rationalize in the best way, taking into account the modern needs of the army and the intense outflow of executives of recent years. The new payroll for the Armed Forces is trying to intercept this wave of flight, while our joint effort with the Ministry of National Defense will quadruple the salaries of students of Higher Military Education Institutions, from 150 to 600 euros, is a clear indication.
The security forces started from a very different starting point, with chronic deprivation of logistical infrastructure, staff shortages and financial losses that had to be restored first. Now that the situation is stabilizing, there is now the place to move on to a more comprehensive rationalization aimed at a single, transparent and modern framework for all those who serve the country’s security and defense.
You are technocratic, with experience in digital governance. How do you intend to “digitize” the economy without losing the human dimension?
Technology is not an end in itself, it is just a tool for making the state more human. In the Ministry of Digital Governance we saw that when you simplify the processes, you do not remove the citizen, you bring him closer. The same is true for the economy. When a citizen avoids hassle and the business can repay VAT or be funded without being lost in bureaucracy, the state ceases to be an obstacle and becomes an ally.
Technology, for me, is only worth it when it improves people’s lives. And this is the big challenge. To convert data and systems into policies with a human footprint.
If you could only apply one meter in 2026 to improve the standard of living for citizens, what would it be?
What we have already announced: a tax change that supports the middle class and attempts to respond to the demographic problem that is the biggest issue in the country. And this reform touches it from many aspects. It supports families and young couples, reinforces the elderly by abolishing personal differences, relieves the district with the abolition of ENFIA and breathing the islands by reducing VAT. It is a policy that embraces the whole of Greece, from Kastelorizo to Kastoria. When tax policy becomes a social cohesion tool, then it is not just about numbers. It concerns the country’s own perspective.
