To International Council for Gaza which will take place tomorrow Monday, Greece will be in the presence of a high level, as Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis will represent the country after an official invitation. The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, will also be on the table, confirming the upgraded role of Athens and Nicosia in the eastern Mediterranean region.
Attitude and diplomatic consistency recognition
Greece’s participation in the Summit is considered a clear message of recognition of the balanced attitude of Athens all the time, maintaining open channels of communication with both Israel and the Palestinian Authority. Greek diplomacy was careful, avoiding unilateral placements but also without hesitating to point out violations and humanitarian tragedies when needed.
In his post, Kyriakos Mitsotakis stressed that “challenge is the implementation of the agreement”, stressing that “only through actions, peace confirms”. At the same time, he noted that Greece would be one of the few European countries that will give the meeting at the Summit, describing this participation as “a response to those who want to see a Greece isolated and miserable”.
Role in humanitarian aid and institutional reconstruction
Athens and Nicosia are expected to play a decisive role in the next day of the area, focusing on providing humanitarian aid and contributing to the reform of the Palestinian Authority’s institutional framework. At the same time, their participation is considered critical to restoring the climate of confidence between Israelis and Palestinians, in a context where international peace initiatives are at a critical crossroads.
Greece to the Security Council
As a member of the United Nations Security Council, Greece is expected to actively participate in decisions that will judge the international legalization of the new Gaza Plan. The geographical proximity to the Middle East, combined with the prestige it enjoys within the European Union, make Athens and Nicosia key links in the European strategy for stabilizing the region.
The Greek presence at Monday’s Summit is not only a diplomatic recognition. It also reflects the claim of an active role in the country in international developments that will determine the next day of Gaza – where peace is still demanded, but for the first time in a while it seems to have an organized political perspective.
