Her words were harsh: her prime minister Danias Mete Fredriksen stated on Tuesday (07.10.2025) that it intends to impose a ban on access to several platforms social media For minors under 15 years old.
“Mobile phones and social media steal the childhood of our children,” the Danish prime minister said.
In her inaugural speech to Parliament, the leader of the Social Democratic Government recalled that in Denmark, almost all the students of the seventh grade – aged 13 or 14 – already have a mobile phone. “I hope you will help me enhance the law to better protect our children,” he added.
Initiative with the support of citizens
This announcement is part of a climate of increasing concern about the impact of social networks on young people’s mental health. In 2024, a political citizen initiative already gathered 50,000 signatures calling for the ban on Tiktok, Snapchat and Instagram for minors.
Fredriksen has not yet clarified the exact details of the future bill, which is currently not included in the government’s legislative program. However, he said that parents would be able to allow their children to open accounts from the age of 13.
A trend that extends to Europe
Denmark could thus follow the example of countries such as Australia, which have already established age limits on social networks. Greece is also getting ready to do the same: By the end of October, the government plans to ban access to social media for the under 15 years of age and block betting or selling tobacco products for the under 18 years of age.
The Greek government is working on a state -owned Kids Wallet application, which will contain the official elements of minors and allow their access to the internet to be controlled.
Thus, the debate on digital protection of children is now expanding throughout Europe, as governments are trying to set limits on a technology that has become ubiquitous and alarming.
