The demographic issue is one of Greece’s biggest social and economic problems. In an environment of inflationary crisis, inequality and insecurity, the new elements of ELSTAT For 2024 they record a worrying reality: the population of the country decreased by 58,449 people compared to the previous year – as a whole city.
More deaths, fewer births
According to ELSTAT, in 2024 births amounted to 68.467reduced by 4.2% compared to 2023. On the contrary, deaths reached their 126.916so the physical reduction remains intense.

It is worth noting that infant mortality has also increased, with the index rising from 3.5 in 2023 to 3.8 in 2024.
Reduction in weddings and cohabitation
Marriages recorded a significant fall, reaching them 36.649 (19,695 religious and 16,954 politicians), reduced by 9.2% compared to 2023. At the same time, cohabitation according to 3.9%.

The majority of divorces (82.4%) were consensual, while 66.4% involved marriages that lasted for over 10 years.
Greece is experiencing a constant demographic shrinkage, with fewer births, more deaths, fewer marriages and more divorces. This phenomenon is not only statistical; it has social, economic and political implications that will determine the future of the country.
