Speaking through a video call with the organizers of the fleet late Thursday night, the Australian captain, who identified himself only as a Cameron, explained that the boat initially had problems with the engine and had therefore left behind the main team. The boat now sails to Gaza, he added.
“We have a group of very tough Turks on the ship … We have a lady from Oman and me, and we will just continue in that direction,” he said.
A live video link from the ship, at dawn, shows the crew driving the ship as the sun rises behind them in the international waters of the Mediterranean.
A living geographical detector shows that the ship was about 43 nautical miles (about 80 kilometers) from the territorial waters of Gaza.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry had previously warned Marinette that “his attempt to enter an active battle zone and violate exclusion will be prevented”.
Israel had previously accused activists of trying to “violate a legal naval exclusion” – a claim that was contrary to international law – and said he would do whatever it took to stop them.
The Israeli Navy has intercepted every boat and captured its crew before transporting it to Israel, where they will be deported. Among the prisoners are several distinguished personalities, such as activist Greta Tunberg, former mayor of Barcelona Ada Kolau and MEP Rima Hassan.
As the largest naval assistance mission that has attempted to deliver supplies to the Palestinian enclave to date, the convoy has gathered global attention, and the seizure of vessels has sparked a worldwide reaction and triggered protests around the world.
